Presenters at the International Workshop held November 7, 2007 as part of the “Just Ask for Whole Grains” conference shared information about whole grain recommendations and promotions around the world.


DENMARK (download now: 324K PDF)
Bente Staerk, Senior Advisor for Food Policy at the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, detailed the success of the Danish “6 A Day” program promoting fruits and vegetables, and explained how lessons learned from this earlier program would be carried over to a new whole grains promotion. She then outlined plans for the whole grains program scheduled to start in 2008 in Denmark.

Gry Skraedderdal Jakobsen, Anthropologist and Project Coordinator with the Danish Cancer Society, gave a preview of a social anthropology study detailing Danish attitudes to whole grains.

Bettina Zeuch, who works in marketing at Kampffmeyer Food Innovation in Hamburg, Germany, shared information about the recommendations of the German Nutrition Society (DGE), along with research on attitudes to whole grains, and information about whole grain products in Germany.

Trish Griffiths, Executive Manager for Go Grains Health & Nutrition Limited, based in Sydney, Australia, presented information about whole grain attitudes, recommendation, and definitions in Australia.

NORWAY (download now: 300K PDF)
Information prepared by Steiner Høie of Norway, about a new packaging symbol for whole grain breads, was presented by Morten Strunge Meyer of Denmark.

EU – HEALTHGRAIN (download now: 912K PDF)
HealthGrain is an EU-wide five-year project with 43 partners in 15 countries, co-ordinated by Kaisa Poutanen of VTT in Finland. Jan Willem van der Kamp of TNO Quality of Life in the Netherlands prepared an overview of HealthGrain. *

HELGA is a pan-Nordic initiative co-ordinated by Anne Tjønneland of the Danish Cancer Society and the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology. This five-year project is part of the European Prospective Investigation on Cancer (EPIC). *

EU – GRAINITY (download now: 344K PDF)
Grainity is a project of the Nordic Innovations Center focusing on supporting development of functional wholegrain rye and oat products. *

US – WHOLE GRAINS COUNCIL (download now: 1.8M PDF)
This presentation, by Cynthia Harriman, Director of Food & Nutrition Strategies for Oldways and the Whole Grains Council, details the promotional programs of the Whole Grains Council. The actual presentation was delivered in the main body of the conference, but is included here to detail the American perspective.

US – WHEAT FOODS COUNCIL (download now: 2.8M PDF)
Marcia Scheideman, President of the Wheat Foods Council, presented an overview of her group’s promotional activities. Although this organization is not dedicated solely to whole grains, much of its work emphasizes the nutritional benefits of whole grains.

WORLD CANCER RESEARCH (download now: 460K PDF)
Morten Strunge Meyer, Project Manager, Department of Prevention & Documentation, Danish Cancer Society, presented an overview of the World Cancer Research Fund’s October 2007 report on links between diet and cancer. His presentation reviewed the evidence on cancer and whole grains.
