There is a new whole grain enthusiast in town, so allow me to introduce myself!

Kelly Toups

I’m Kelly Toups and I recently joined Oldways as Program Manager for the Whole Grains Council. As a Registered Dietitian, I’m passionate about introducing people to the wonderful world of healthy meals, with an emphasis on whole foods and traditional recipes. In my experience, most people find that with a little bit of creativity, what’s nutritious is also delicious! Drawing on my background in recipe editing, health campaign programming, and food systems research, I am more than eager to share my passion with both consumers and manufacturers alike, in order to get everyone excited about whole grains.

Coming up just next week is Whole Grains Month, where we at Oldways will provide you with all of the resources you need to “Make the Switch” to whole grains. In the meantime, I’m sharing my three favorite ways to enjoy whole grains below:

Gourmet Oatmeal: Oatmeal is an integral part of my daily ritual. Bored with brown sugar and raisins? My favorite combinations are pear and chai spices, and bananas and cocoa powder. During the hot summer months, I experiment with “overnight oats.”  Before bed, I fill a mason jar with equal parts oats, yogurt, fruit, and water, and in the morning, the concoction has thickened into a refreshing summer treat. Brown Rice Sushi: From boutique Japanese restaurants, to the grab and go cooler of local grocery stores, I’m excited to see that whole grain versions of this popular dish are becoming more and more common. For another twist on this trend, try making your own whole grain Nori Rolls

Bulked-up Burgers: From black bean and bulgur veggie patties, to stuffed turkey burgers, whole grains are the perfect low-cost addition to any patty, meatless or not. And of course, no burger is complete without a warm and toasty whole grain bun.
