Just as another late snowstorm in our part of the country made all of us grumpy, a ray of cheer arrived in the form of the 2009 Good Healthy Life Calendar from Dr. Angela Erdrich and the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate (people) in South Dakota – featuring whole grains and the Whole Grain Stamp on the March page.

The Whole Grains Council is honored to be included in such a wondrous calendar. You’re thinking “wondrous calendar” is an exagerration, but that’s because you haven’t seen this calendar. It’s a vibrant, fascinating window into the life of this Dakota/Lakota/Nakota tribe, complete with information about native foods (if you’re wondering about the title of this entry, tipsina is wild prairie turnip, kan’ta is wild plums, and omnica is beans), the Twelve Values of the Oyate, and great advice on local resources and people.

The message of respect for your own body, respect for traditional and healthy foods, and respect for other people comes through beautifully in this calendar. (Cynthia)
