This time last year, we were excited to help spread the word about the Cranberry Citrus Crisp, the first Girl Scout Cookie made with whole grains. Now we are pleased to report that – building on the growing popularity of whole grains overall and oats, in particular – the Girl Scouts have rolled out TWO MORE whole grain cookies for 2015!
The first new cookies, Trios, are peanut butter oatmeal cookies with chocolate chips, which also happen to be gluten-free. Chocolate and peanut butter are a time-tested combination, so this was a smart recipe to venture into the gluten-free market with. Additionally, gluten-free oats are the first ingredient, which is a good indicator that these cookies are loaded with whole grain goodness! (In case you were wondering, sugar is the first ingredient of Caramel deLites/Samoas). Trios (and the other new gluten-free, albeit whole grain-free, cookies, Toffee-tastic) are only available in test markets right now, but I can’t wait to track some down!
Whole grain oats also make an appearance in Rah-Rah Raisins, the new oatmeal raisin cookies that feature Greek yogurt flavored chunks. Oatmeal raisin is a timeless recipe, but Greek yogurt morsels bring this classic cookie into the 21st century. Unlike the Trios, which contain no refined flours, the Rah-Rah Raisins still have more enriched white flour than oats. However, a cookie studded with healthy ingredients like oats and raisins is surely a step up from some of the other cookies, with their hefty doses of refined sugars and saturated fat.
Girl Scout cookies are baked by two different bakeries, and the flavors you get – and sometimes the names they go by – depend on where you live. The Trios are produced by ABC Bakers (they call the cookies in the purple box “Caramel deLites”), and the Rah Rah Raisins are produced by Little Brownie Bakers (they call the purple box cookies “Samoas”), meaning no matter which bakery supplies your local troop, you are likely going to have a chance to try at least one of these tasty new cookies.
Have you tried the Cranberry Citrus Crisps, Trios, or Rah-Rah Raisins yet? Which whole grain Girl Scout cookie is your favorite? (Kelly)
