The Summer Solstice brings longer days, warmer weather and the long awaited BBQ season. With the Fourth of July coming up this weekend, outdoor grilling menus are coming together and grocery lists are being made. Some people think of whole grains as being a heartier fall or winter choice, but we want to show you where to add those whole grains to your list for your next midsummer gathering.
Grilling is at the top of most people’s list for The Fourth, and there are multiple ways to sneak those whole grains over the flames. Try this Tropical Chicken Burger made using whole grain breadcrumbs for a light, citrusy patty with a kick. Another great grillable option is Lighter’s Kidney Bean Veggie Burger made with whole oats and piled high with all the fixings. However, if your friends and family prefer the tried-and-true hot dog and hamburger combination serve them up on soft, chewy whole wheat buns.
One of the easiest ways to add grains to your picnic table is in a side dish. There are numerous places you can add whole grains with a summery twist. To play to summer’s burgeoning tomato crop, try this Greek Whole Wheat Pasta Salad. Packed with the flavors of the Mediterranean, this pasta salad is a great way to effortlessly incorporate whole grains into everyone’s plate. Another crowd favorite is the traditional macaroni salad. This Best Ever Creamy Macaroni Salad with whole wheat elbows showcases roasted red peppers and sweet and spicy pickles. If you’re entrusted to bring the chips and salsa, try a fiery island twist — your guests will love this easy Quinoa Mango Salsa paired with a bag of whole grain tortilla chips. (Note: If you’re not sure if your tortilla chips are whole grain, check the ingredient list for the word “whole” or just look for a Stamped product!)
Oh, and don’t forget dessert! My personal favorite summertime sweet is the s’more. Even this time-honored classic can be kicked up a notch by sandwiching those perfectly toasty mallows between two whole wheat graham crackers like these ones by Back to Nature, or if you’re feeling ambitious try baking your own 100% whole wheat graham crackers with this kid-approved King Arthur Flour recipe.
There are endless ways to add healthy, delicious whole grains to your summer socials. Tell us your favorite ways to bring grain to grill.
