Did you know that the Whole Grains Council is a program of Oldways, a nutrition nonprofit focused on cultural food traditions? Oldways just launched a new website, full of great information and resources for anyone curious about nutrition and traditional foodways. This has been a major project we’ve been working on, and we’re so excited to share the result with you!
Whole grains are a foundational part of heritage diets across the globe, and for that reason they play a prominent role in Oldways’ Heritage Diet programs. No matter whether you’re a nutritional professional or a member of the public, you can find great resources on our Mediterranean Diet, African Heritage Diet, Asian Heritage Diet, Latin American Heritage Diet, and Vegetarian & Vegan Dietprograms. If you explore the food pyramids, you may notice a familiar ingredient at the base of all of them: whole grains! The work we do at the Whole Grains Council is built on the foundation provided by Oldways’ research and work around cultural food traditions.
For anyone who would like to take a deep dive into the culinary joy of heritage diets, we have developed African Heritage and Latin American Heritage cooking curricula that are used to teach heritage cooking classes. We invite you to find an in-person class near you, take our African Heritage e-course, or become a teacher yourself!
In our Health Studies Database, you can find many resources on the health benefits associated with traditional diets and whole grains. We keep this database up to date with the latest research on the health benefits associated with traditional diets.
To learn many different ways to use delicious heritage ingredients, our recipe section features dishes from each heritage diet! Whole grains are highlighted in many of the recipes, like the Tangy Quinoa Salad, Amaranth Banana Walnut Bread, or Whole Wheat Flatbread with Blackberries and Ricotta.
Explore the new website here, and let us know what you think!
