Back in 2007 we were delighted to learn that customers of PF Chang’s China Bistro and Pei Wei Asian Diner ordered almost as much brown rice as they did white rice. At the time, we applauded these restaurants for offering both rice options equally – “Do you want white rice or brown rice with that?” – instead of simply slapping down white rice and making whole grain lovers beg (and wait) for brown rice.

Now we’re equally happy to learn about developments at another Asian restaurant chain, Panda Express. Earlier this year, Panda Express added brown steamed rice as an option to white steamed rice. The chain also replaced its white fried rice with brown fried rice, due to “frequent guest input and requests.” It’s logistically difficult for the chain to offer two kinds of fried rice, so this was an out-and-out substitution, rather than the addition of another option.

Some white fried rice lovers missed the “classic” fried rice, and raised their voices, prompting Panda Express management to invite diners to vote with their forks. From July 3 through August 31, Panda Express is offering both fried rice options at their more than 1600 stores in 42 states.

We’re delighted to see, halfway through the fried rice challenge, that brown rice is out-tallying white rice two to one. (Panda Express posts ongoing tallies on their Facebook page.) Let’s not get complacent, though. There’s still a month to go, so if you find yourself ordering fried rice at a Panda Express, make sure to opt for brown rice. Just ask for whole grains, as we say here at the Whole Grains Council. Make your preference for whole grains loud and clear. (Cynthia)
